🃏 Gameplay

How do I play Gin Rummy?

Gin Rummy is a two-player card game where you draw and discard cards to form melds (sets and runs) while reducing your deadwood (unmatched cards). Each turn, you draw a card from the stock or discard pile, then discard one card. The goal is to knock with low deadwood or go Gin with zero deadwood.

Can I play against other real players?

Yes! You can play multiplayer games against real players from around the world. Our matchmaking system pairs you with players of similar skill levels for fair and competitive games. You can also invite friends to play private matches using a shared game link.

Can I practice against the computer?

Yes! We offer AI opponents at multiple difficulty levels — from beginner-friendly bots to advanced AI that plays near-optimal strategy. It's a great way to learn the game and sharpen your skills before challenging real players.

What's a good score in Gin Rummy?

Going Gin (0 deadwood) is the best possible outcome for a single round, earning you a 25-point Gin bonus on top of your opponent's total deadwood value. A shutout — winning the entire game without your opponent scoring a single round — is the ultimate achievement, as it doubles your final score.

What's the difference between Knocking and going Gin?

Knocking means ending the round when you have 10 or fewer points of deadwood (unmatched cards). You reveal your hand, and your opponent can lay off cards on your melds. You score the difference in deadwood — but if your opponent has equal or lower deadwood, they get an undercut bonus!

Going Gin means having zero deadwood — all 10 cards are in valid melds. This earns you a 25-point Gin bonus and prevents your opponent from laying off any cards. It's riskier but far more rewarding.

🔄 Gin Rummy vs Other Games

What's the difference between Gin Rummy and Rummy?

Gin Rummy is a two-player variant of the broader Rummy family of card games. While standard Rummy can be played with 2-6 players and allows melding cards to the table during play, Gin Rummy keeps all cards in hand until the round ends with a knock or Gin. Gin Rummy also features unique mechanics like the undercut bonus and Gin bonus.

What is Oklahoma Gin?

Oklahoma Gin is the most popular Gin Rummy variation. The key difference is that the first upcard determines the maximum deadwood value you can have when knocking. If a 5 is turned up, you need 5 or fewer deadwood to knock. If an Ace is turned up, you must go Gin — no knocking allowed!

Read the full rules on our Oklahoma Gin rules page.

What are the main Gin Rummy variations?

The three most popular Gin Rummy variations are:

  • Oklahoma Gin: Dynamic knock limits based on the first upcard
  • Hollywood Gin: Triple-column scoring system for extended play
  • Straight Gin: No knocking allowed — you must go Gin every round

Explore all variations on our Gin Rummy Variations page.

What makes Gin Rummy different from other card games?

Gin Rummy uniquely combines hand management, strategic discarding, and opponent reading into a fast-paced two-player experience. The knocking mechanic adds a distinctive risk-reward element not found in most card games — do you knock early with some deadwood, or push for Gin and risk being undercut? The game rewards both skill and calculated risk-taking.
